PIT Count
The Point-in-Time (PIT) count is a single-night snapshot conducted every January. Volunteers physically count every homeless person they can find — sheltered and unsheltered. It is required by HUD and is the official federal measure of homelessness. It is always an undercount. The 2025 count was conducted January 29, 2025.
Unsheltered
People sleeping in places not meant for human habitation: outside, under bridges, in tents, in abandoned buildings, or in vehicles. Vehicles count as unsheltered under HUD's definition.
Homeless Students
K-12 students identified as homeless by Idaho schools under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. This definition is broader than HUD's — it includes children doubled up with other families (couch surfing), in motels, or in transitional housing. Data from Idaho Department of Education.
County-Level Estimates
Idaho's PIT count is organized by 7 regions, not individual counties. Ada County (Region 7) has an exact count of 772. All other counties show population-weighted estimates derived from their regional totals. These are approximations.

Incident pins are scraped weekly from Google News, KTVB, KIVI, East Idaho News, Idaho State Journal, Post Register, and Idaho-focused Reddit communities. They reflect recent reporting on homeless camps, enforcement actions, and policy news — not verified field observations.
